Week 9 May 18-22

It's still the month of Mary.  When I hear the name Mary, I also think of artist Mary Blair.  Mary Blair worked with Walt Disney on several occurences, one being the It's A Small World Ride in Disney World.  Have you been on it?  The picture below is from opening day, and the building design is inspried by one of her designs, also seen below. 



Your task for this week is to build or draw your own building or castle out of shapes and colors.  If you have building blocks at home, this is perfect project for you.  Use the squares, rectangles, and triangles to build up your castle. See how big you can make it.  If you do not have building blocks, you can draw your castle.  You can use a ruler and pencil to draw it all out.  YOu simply want to stack up squares and rectangles to make your towers. In each square and rectangle, add a triangle or two, or an arch or a circle.  Just think shapes.  The more shapes the better. Once you are done drawing fill in all of the shapes with bright colors.  Use whatever materials you have at home: crayons, colored pencils, markers, paint.

Week 8 May 11-15

Artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo was an Italian painter best known for creating  portraits made entirely of objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and books. An image of his Allegorical Portrait "Summer" is seen below. 


This week I want you to play with your food! You can work off of your portrait from last week or just create any face.  There are two simple samples below.  You can use all food, or you can also use any found objects from around your home.  You could also cut out images of food from magazines to create a collage. You can also use a print out picture of yourself and add food ontop. Get creative.  Use your imagination to make a food and found object portrait.

Week 7 May 4-8
cinco de mayo 

Tuesday is cinco de mayo (May 5th)! I love any holiday, especially one that involves food.  Cinco de mayo in my house this year is full of some sort of Mexican cuisine and crafts, along with zoom meetings of course. Cinco de mayo celebrates Mexican culture and pride.  In 1862 the Mexican army defeated the French in the battle of Puebla. I have included a link for a little more history about cinco de mayo.

Some other items that are common with Mexican culture are guitars and maracas, pinatas, sombreros, sugar skulls, and there is so much more. Since everyone is wearing masks these day, we will be making our own sugar skull mask.  I have included a link with different templates.  Feel free to print one out and color it, use the templates as inspiration and simply draw your own skull and add your own decorations.  Once your skull is colored and cut out, if you add two holes on either side (where the ears would be) you could then attach a ribbon or piece of twine to make it a mask.  Remember when coloring, you want to color in your shapes completely. You may use whatever coloring utensils you have.  When you are cutting out your mask, make sure the scissors are pointed away from you.  Take your time.  Have fun. Happy cinco de mayo. Week 6 April 27 - May 1
Friday and self portraits

As we come into May by the end of the week, I can't help but think of cinco de mayo.  Which leads me to the great artist Frida Kahlo. She was a amazing Mexican artist.  She painted a ton of self-portraits (pictures of herself).  I have included some slides to provide you more information about her life and her art.  After viewing the slide, please create your own self portrait.  I have included a step by step drawing below, as well as in the slides.  Once you have drawn your picture with pencil, feel free to add some color, add a background, use crayons, use paints.  Use your imagination.  Add objects and colors that are personal to you.  The sample below has a name along the side.  If you want to add your name in bubble letters, go for it! Week 5 April 20-24
Earth Day

Genesis 2:5
“And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth,
and there was not a man to till the ground.”

I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter break. This week is special because Wednesday is Earth Day. During the days of creation God created land and plants on day 3.  Now is a great time to get plants and trees ready to place into the Earth.  I have been getting my garden ready at home.  I have put seeds in the ground already for carrots, beets, zuccini, squash, beans, and sunflowers.  I still have some plants inside my home that need to get bigger before we put them in the dirt.  One plant I am really excited about are the sunflowers! They can grow to be very tall. The tallest recorded sunflower was 30 ft and 1 in.  That's huge!

There is an artist who loved to paint his sunflowers.  We have mentioned him in class before.  His name is Vincent Van Gogh. I have included a short video about him. You will probably recognize some of his paintings.  After viewing the video I have a drawing game for you.  Some of you have played the dice rolling game in class, but if you haven't this is how it works.  You will use the chart I have included below to design your drawing. Roll the dice and it will tell you what to draw. For the first roll, the dice will tell you what kind of vase you will draw.  Every roll after that will tell you which kind of flower to add.  The chart only goes to 4, but you may certainly add more than 3 flowers.  Add as many as you want.  Once your vase of sunflowers is drawn, feel free to add a table top line in the background and color away!

Easter Break
April 13-17


I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter weekend.  I know we are technically on "Easter Break" but I wanted to drop some inspiration incase you were looking for something to make.  I have included a link to the Tate Kids website.  The Tate actually consists of 4 Art museums in Great Britain.  The tate.org.uk/kids/ website has so many fun things to explore, crafts, quizzes, games, and much more. Below I have included 2 links. One is a video on Surrealism and the other link is for a project to create a surrealism drawing.  It will ask you to download an activity packet and print it out.  You do not have to print it out.  If you just download it will will ask you to pick three objects from a list of 12.  Use those 3 images to create your own surrealism art work.  You could always just create a drawing form your dreams or take some time to doodle.

Week 4 April 6-8
Happy Holy week!

Genesis 9: 16
And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
 

In this time we need to believe and trust in the Lord, and remember that he will save us, guide us, and give us strength.  The "bow" in the cloud is refering to a rainbow.  With all of the April showers, we are bound to see some rainbows soon.  I have a current artist to share with you who loves her rainbow colors! Her nam is Jen Stark.  She creates 2D and 3D colorful projects that make your head really think about what it is you're looking at.  For this week, please explore her website.  Get some inspiration.  Use color, use your imagination, use organic, natural shapes and form.  Once you are inspired, get a piece of paper, a pencil or black marker and draw some drippy lines.  Color in your lines and shapes with whatever materials you have at home: crayons, markers, or paint.  Below is a sample drawing that I made. Feel free to add any text if you want, but it is not necessary.

Week 3 March 30-April 3rd

While at home, it is important to remember we can create art out of anything. Anything! I have attached two videos for you to take a look at so you can see what I mean.

I am sure we all have a piece of paper laying around.  So, I have included some links for origami for this week.  There are paper airplanes, fortune tellers, and a bookmark . Remember when starting out a piece of origami, we need a square piece of paper, which we can make from any piece of paper that we have.  You can see how to do that in the first few steps for the fortune teller.

Week 2 March 23rd-27th
Welcome to week 2 at home! I hope everyone was able to enjoy one of the art lessons/ideas I posted last week.  This week ahead seems a bit rainy and maybe a little chilly out.  I can gaurentee we will be having hot chocolate, tea, and coffee at our home this week.  Below is a video from a fellow Art teacher with a guided lesson on how to draw a cup of hot cocoa.  Her name is Cassie Stephens.  She teaches art in Tennesee and is amazing.  I'm sure you will see some more videos from her in the future.  

For the drawing below, you will need a piece of paper and whatever coloring materials you have available.  Cassie uses a tube of paint to draw, similar to a Bingo dauber.   I don't have any of them laying around my house, so feel free to start with a pencil, black crayon, or black oil pastel.  This project uses a resistance technique.  We have done this in the classroom before with oil pastels and watercolors, and with crayons and watercolors.  As long as you use two different materials (crayons and markers even) you will achieve a resistance look. If you do not have many supplies at home, you can always just use a pencil and crayons to color.
